Testimonials from Participants of
Our Previous Kumbh Mela tours:

"I had an awesome experience with the Divine Travels tour to the Kumbha Mela. It was definitely an experience of a lifetime."--Deborah, hairdesigner, Ohio.

"My experience with Susan Shumsky and Divine Travels (to the Maha Kumbh Mela festival in India January 2001) was truly excellent. Everything was well organized, accommodation and meals were very good, and it was possible to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience that would have been extremely difficult to arrange through any other company. Guiding a diverse group of Westerners through a festival attended by close to 100 million people was a difficult challenge but the Divine Travels staff managed it with great efficiency, patience and kindness. Above all, I was impressed by their constant dedication and concern for the welfare of those on the trip."--Paul Lowe, author, England.

"The tour was very well organized. I was very comfortable and felt really protected amongst 30 million people at the Mela. I felt very included and appreciated by the tour leaders and guides. I traveled alone, but felt welcomed! The accommodations, transportation, and food were remarkably high-end. Our dinner out as a group was one of bonding and excellent food."--Tour participant.

"It was a not to be missed, life expanding experience. We had special audiences with powerful spiritual leaders, witnessed unique ceremonies, met gurus that we could only have had access to through Rajiv, our tour guide. We were very comfortable, safe, and secure. We were very well taken care of by kind and delightful guides. Highly recommended."--Barbara, artist, NYC.

"I have taken the Kumba Mela tour with Susan Shumsky and I feel it was the best tour tour I have ever taken. The tour was extremely well planned, which in a country like India is quite important, but also had the ability to be flexible, intimate and to respond to everyones needs. Susan's experience and knowledge of India is extremely valuable and the tour company used in India is of the highest caliber. I myself am planning to take additional tours with Susan in the future and would recommend her without any hesitation."--Dr. Randy Meltzer.

"It has been a year since I toured India for the Kumbh Mela tour. I think every day I mention to someone something about that experience. I feel so lucky to do this tour with Divine Travels/ Mystical Journeys, because of their ability to organize a trip taking care of all the logistics, making sure our food and water are safe so we don't get sick, but still covering a lot of territory, being flexible, and adventurous. This is not your typical coach riding tour. You get in the heart of the culture, and get in to do things that the average independent traveler could never do. I went on this tour by myself, made many friends, and consider it a life changing experience with nothing but positive things to say. I highly recommend Divine Travels/ Mystical Journeys to guide you so you can relax and focus on the spirit of India."--Angel F., Bellevue, WA.

"Bathing in the Ganges River on the most auspicious day of the Maha Kumbha Mela was like basking in nectar. My consciousness was lifted and my perceptions awakened. Kumbh Mela was the most deeply moving experience of my life. There is no expression in our language to describe it adequately."--Tour participant.

"At the Maha Kumbh Mela, I communed with God, which I saw as everything contained within myself. It was the awareness of my path and expanded freedom that brought me to tears of joy. There exists no words to fully explain the depth of that communion. I know only liberation and the utmost kindness was totally re-enforced.--Deborah, hairdesigner, Ohio.

TIMING OF KUMBH MELA

The Kumbh Mela ("festival of the pot of nectar of immortality") is held every three years in each of four different locations, returning to each of four places every twelve years. An Ardh (half) Mela (festival) takes place six years after the Purna (full) Kumbh in each location.

Kumbh Mela is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage and bathing festival that takes place at the following 4 locations of India:

-Prayag (near the city of Allahabad, in the state of Uttar Pradesh) at the confluence of three rivers Ganga (Ganges), Yamuna and mythical Saraswati.
-
Haridwar (in the state of Uttaranchal Pradesh) where the river Ganga enters the plains from Himalayas.
-
Ujjain (in Madhya Pradesh), on the banks of Ksipra river.
-
Nasik (in Maharashtra) on the banks of Godavari river.

Shahi Snaan (Royal Bath) for six Akharas of Vaishnav and Udasi sects: March 15, March 30, and April 14, 2010

The basic point of the Kumbh Mela is for pilgrims to bathe at certain sacred spots on certain auspicious days. A large tented city is erected and pilgrims stay at tents owned by Pandas (religious and spiritual guides) and at various ashrams and hotels. Others will just camp on the ground or visit for the actual bathing day. Some of these bathing days are designated "royal." On all the 10 major bathing dates, the naga sadhus (naked mendicants) will parade and bathe. On all other days there will still be people bathing, other events, and random processions.

Our Previous Kumbh Mela Tours in 2001 and 2007:

The largest gathering in history -- 100 million people at Maha Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, India. We celebrated a powerful planetary alignment -- January, 2001. This nexus of cosmic energy converges every 144 years, bringing dramatic changes in the destiny of humanity.

We met the radiant Himalayan saints, sages, seers, sadhus, and yogis who make their rare appearance at Kumbh Mela in Prayag, the confluence of the Ganges, Jamuna, and mythical Saraswati Rivers. Kumbh Mela takes place during an auspicious planetary position that is believed to medicate the Ganges waters and turn the river into nectar. Millions arrive to purify their inner self through holy bathing rituals.

We were blessed to experience Maha (Great) Kumbh Mela in 2001 and Ardh (Half) Kumbh Mela in 2007 in Allahabad. Here are some of the highlights of our tour that we took in January, 2001:

Above all, I was impressed by their constant dedication and concern for the welfare of those on the trip."--Paul Lowe, author, England

The Blissful Darshan:

Wave upon wave of bliss. The darshan -- the blessings -- of all the magnificent saints and yogis who come out of their Himalayan caves only once very 12 years in order to bless the people. This is the Kumbh Mela ("the festival of the pot of nectar - amrit kalash - of immortality"). A once in a lifetime, unforgettable event!

Lahiri Mahasaya, the paramguru of the famous saint Paramahansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi, met his guru, the Mahavatar Babaji, at Kumbh Mela.

The Procession of Holy Saints:

To watch the Kumbh Mela processions is to witness the march of the ages. As the holy saints pass by on their various and sundry conveyances -- elephants, horses, palanquins, chariots, cars, and camels -- they are continually transmitting waves of powerful shakti (energy) to all the people who witness this awe-inspiring and most auspicious event. Devotees are overwhelmed by the palpable spiritual vibrations that pervade the entire atmosphere.

While the parade of saints marches towards the Ganges River, the sounds baffle all description -- the shout and cries of ash-smeared sadhus mingle with the neighing of horses, trumpeting of elephants, grunting of camels, bellowing of bulls. Gongs and drums beat, trumpets blare, conch shells blow and bells ring. In the midst of this cacophony, musicians and dancers perform.

The Atmosphere:

Kumbh Mela -- This unique event blends religious and cultural features alike. With the entire atmosphere saturated with chiming bells, incense and flower fragrance, Vedic hymns, mantras, beating of drums on horses, camels, and elephants during the processions of naga (naked) sadhus from different akhadas (orders) in their gold and silver chariots being pulled by devotees, as they show their strength and skills -- pure enchantment for the soul.

Kumbh Fair is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the lucky ones. The crowd and confusion of buyers and sellers, the native groups in every imaginable costume. Some shine in cloths of gold, surrounded by followers splendidly arranged, others are less expensively but picturesquely dressed, and many are half or full naked or wildly clad. The melange of priests, soldiers, religious mendicants, half beggars-half bandits, with a smattering of Europeans, exhibit all together an exotic display -- unique in all the world.

The Legend:

Mythological legends say that at the beginning of creation, all the Gods were under a curse that made them weak and cowardly. Brahma, the creator God, advised them to retrieve the Kumbh (pot) containing the nectar of immortality (amrit). The gods sought help from the demons, and together they churned the primordial ocean to bring up the nectar.

As Dhanvantari, the divine healer, appeared with the "Kumbh" containing nectar in his palms, a great fight ensued between the Gods and demons to wrest the pitcher. During the fierce battle in the sky, a few drops of nectar fell in four different places: Allahabad (Prayag), Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain.

Since then, when the planets align in the same position, pilgrims and devotees converge to commemorate this divine event. Purna (Full) Kumbh Mela takes place every three years in rotation in the four sacred places. Therefore Kumbh Mela in each location takes place every twelfth year. The Ardh Kumbh Mela takes place in the sixth year between Kumbh Melas.

In the four holy places Purna Kumbh Mela takes place at an interval of twelve years coinciding with one round of Jupiter through the zodiac.

Above is a photo of Kumbh Mela 100 years ago.
This ancient tradition has occurred since time immemorial.

Holy Snan:

Holy Snan or bathing in the river Ganges is of great importance. It is believed that it washes away all the sins and the cycle of rebirth and death ends as the soul becomes one with God Almighty.

Below are listed the auspicious holy bathing dates at the Kumbh Mela. On the main bathing dates there will be a colorful, magnificent procession of radiant saints on chariots and elephants at sunrise. As the saints pass by, they impart blessings of divine grace to all the people. Then the glorious saints took their dip (shahi snan) in the Holy River Ganges. This takes place according to tradition, each group proceeding to the river and then bathing in a particular sequence. After all these groups have bathed, then all other people will take their turn to march to the Ganges for their bath.

Main Bathing Dates:

  • 14 January 2010 (Thursday) - Makar Sankranti - First Snan

  • 15 January 2010 (Friday) - Mauni Amavasya and Surya Grahan (Solar Eclipse) - Second Snan
This is "New Moon of the Saints." For the holy men and women this is a main bathing day where they participated in gilded and naked processions. It is also a day when new members to various holy monastic orders receive their first initiation.
  • 20 January 2010 (Wed) - Vasant Panchami - Third Snan
This is the fifth day of the bright half of the lunar month and is the beginning of spring in North India. Traditionally people wear yellow on this day. It is day when people prayed to the Gods for a good bumper harvest.
  • 30 January 2010 - (Saturday) Magh Purnima - Fourth Snan
This is the full moon in the month of Magha (January - February). Winter is a memory and the moon shines over the holy river.
  • 12 to 13 February 2007 (Friday) - Mahashivratri - Pratham Shahi Snan - First Royal Bath
This is the Great Night of Shiva, the Naked One, from whose dreadlocks the Ganges flows. He married Parvati, daughter of the Himalayas on this day. Shiva has many followers, none more so than the naked Naga sadhus who live life in imitation of him.
  • 15 March 2010 (Monday)- Somvati Amavasya - Dvitya Shahi Snan - Royal Bath for six Akharas of Vaishnav and Udasi sects
The no moon day on a Monday is such an auspicious event that the river Ganga, the divine cosmos, along with all the revered pilgrimages on this earth, shower exceptional spiritual benediction on anyone who performs worship, japa, or meditation on this auspicious day. The significance of this day is equivalent to the auspiciousness of a Solar Eclipse. Taking a holy dip, performance of charitable acts and Shraddha (giving oblations in the name of manes) on this day is considered perennial & everlasting. Observance of vow of silence followed by a holy dip in the sacred waters bestows the person with the meritorious effect equivalent to that of giving a thousand cows in donation.
  • 24 March 2010 (Wednesday)- Ram Navami - Fifth Snan
A famous Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Rama. It is auspicious to undertake a fast on this day in the name of Rama. Many devotees fast for nine days, beginning on Ugadi (first day of Indian year) to Rama Navami. The objective of the fast is to seek perfection as a human being.
  • 30 March 2010 (Tuesday) - Chaitra Purnima Snan: Royal Bath for six Akharas of Vaishnav and Udasi sects
The full moon day of Chaitra month is particularly sacred to the Chitra Guptas, the recording angels of the Hindu pantheon. A special worship is offered to these celestial representatives of the god of death, and an offering of spiced rice is prepared and later distributed as prasad or holy sacrament. A fire worship is done at the close of the ritualistic worship. This is also the birthday of the monkey God Hanuman, who symbolizes strength, unparalleled devotion, and selfless service. A fast is often observed on this date, and mantras to Hanuman are chanted.
  • 14 April 2010 (Wednesday) - Amavasya of Krishna Paksh (dark fortnight) of month of Baisakh (Vaisakha or Jyeshtha) - Pramukh Shahi Snan: MAIN ROYAL BATH for six Akharas of Vaishnav and Udasi sects
The no moon day in the month of Vaisakh is the festival of Vata Savitri Vratam. It is a fast day observed by all Hindu married women for their husbands' good health and longevity. In early morning, women take purificatory bath and wear new clothes. Savitri is worshipped and fruits are offered to the goddess. In the afternoon, they bow to their respective husbands and elderly people.
  • 28 April 2010 (Wednesday) - Vaishakha (Shakh) Purnima - Snan
The full moon day, last auspicious bathing date of the Kumbh festival, marks the three major events in Lord Buddha's life: His birth, enlightenment and death. Observance of Satyanarayana Swamy Vratam and Vishnu Pujas are done on this day, the birthday of Thallapaka Annamacharya (Annamayya).

Haridwar:

Haridwar is an ancient holy city of India, one of the seven holiest places to Hindus. The river Ganges enters the North Indian plains at Haridwar. The name of the city is "Dwar of Hari" or "Gateway to God." It is also known as Mayapuri, Kapila and Gangadwar. Hindu pilgrims and devotees gather at Haridwar to offer prayers on auspicious occasions. The water of River Ganga is considered so sacred at Haridwar that pilgrims carry the water back home.

Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, Haridwar represents the point where the Ganga reaches the plains. Several temples and ashrams dot this town, and a visit to Haridwar is like stepping into a totally different world.

It is believed that Haridwar has been sanctified by the presence of three Gods: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Devout believers feel that they will attain salvation after a dip in the sacred Ganga at Haridwar. The center of this activity is Har-ki-Pauri, "Footsteps of God." Lined with temples and guesthouses overlooking the river, Worshippers bathe early in the morning at the ghats (bathing areas on the river) and participate in the spectacular Ganga Arti (worship of the river Ganga with lamps) in the evenings. In the distance are the Himalayan peaks, and all around forests and hill shrines. The atmosphere, the rituals and the view around Haridwar all serve to bring each pilgrim to an exalted state of awareness.

Haridwar is one of the four venues of the Kumbh Mela (occurring after a rotation of every 12 years) and Ardh Kumbh (after every 6 years). According to Hindu mythology, this city is one of four sites where drops of the elixir of immortality (amrita) accidentally spilled from the pitcher carried by the celestial bird Garuda. The other spots include Ujjain, Nasik, and Allahabad. These places are the hosts of Kumbha Mela, celebrated every 3 years in one of these 4 places. The Maha Kumbha Mela is celebrated on the 12th year at Prayag in Allahabad. In Haridwar, the spot where the drop fell is known as Brahmakund at Har-ki-Pauri which means the "Footsteps of the Lord." A dip in the Brahmakund at Kumbh Mela is considered very auspicious.

The Har-ki-pauri is the main bathing ghat. It is believed that by bathing here all sins are cleansed and unification with God is possible. There is the 'Panch Tirth' or Five Pilgrimages within the city; these include the Gangadwara or Har-ki-pauri, Kushwart Ghat, Kankhal, Bilwa Teerth or Mansa Devi and Neel Parvat or the Chandi Devi. Apart from these other holy site include the Satikund, the Bhimogada tank, the Jairam Ashram, Saptrishi Ashram, and many more.

Situated in the plains of Uttarakhand state, Haridwar is located in the foot of Shivalik ranges. In Haridwar, the Ganga river leaves the Himalayas and starts it journey in the planes. Haridwar has an altitude of 250 meters (820 feet). Summer months are extremely hot and winters are very cold. Summer is April to June or mid July. Winter is October to February. The temperature is 41 degrees C (106 F) maximum and 16 degrees (61 F) C minimum in summer and 18 degrees C (64 F) maximum and 4 degrees C (39 F) minimum in winter. The best time to visit is October to April. The time zone is +4.5 G.M.T. Haridwar is a dry city, which does not permit the use of either alcohol or nonvegetarian food.

During the Kumbh Mela period, millions of devotees live in a tent city. Hindu religious organizations erect their camps during this period. Stories and scenes from Hindu religious texts are staged by the folk theater groups in different places in the Mela area. Many devotees live in camps and ashrams for the whole duration of the Mela and lead a sacred life. This is called kalpavas and these people are called kalpvasee.

WELCOME TO THE GATEWAY OF THE GODS
Haridwar invites you in 2010 for Kumbh Mela

Between 1786-1794 two British artists, Thomas Daniel and William Daniel, visited Haridwar and their numerous paintings are possibly the first visual records of the city. Capt. Thomas Skinner witnessed the Kumbh Fair at Haridwar in 1830 said, "We had passed thousands of people in every description of vehicles hastening towards it. They were of all ages, all costumes and all complexions; no spot on earth can produce so great a variety of the human race at one assemblage."

To watch a Kumbh procession is to witness the march of centuries. The noise baffles all description, the shout and cries of ash-smeared sadhus co-mingle with the neighing of horses, the trumpeting of elephants, the grunts of camels, the bellowing of bulls, as well as gongs and drums beating, trumpets blaring, conch shells blowing, and bells ringing. In the midst of all this discord, musicians perform.

Astrologers say that the Kumbh Fair ( Mela ) takes place in Haridwar when Jupiter enters Aquarius and the Sun enters Aries. This planetary position is said to medicate the waters of Ganga at a particular spot called Har-ki-pauri on the banks of River Ganges in Haridwar, and turns it into nectar on these days, thereby attracting millions to purify their inner-self through holy bathing rituals. Spiritually, position of planets during the Kumbh Mela is good for concentration and meditation.

Though all the Hindu festivals are celebrated here with pomp and gaiety, it is the Kumbh Mela that attracts the mind of any tourist to this place. The city is overflowing with people. If going to Haridwar during Kumbh Mela, it is a good idea to reserve your tour well in advance.

Divine Travels is offering various packages for people coming to Haridwar for Kumbh fair 2010. Scroll Down for 10-night or 14-night itineraries, plus pre-tour and post-tour extensions.

Chattarpur Temple: Barely 4km away from Qutub Minar stand the ostentatious and opulent temples of Chattarpur. Made of shining white marble - the stone favored by Delhi's nouveau riche Delhi - these temples are very popular with the city's Hindus and the queues during Durga Puja have to be seen to be believed. The main temple is dedicated to goddess Durga.

Swaminarayan Akshardham in New Delhi epitomises 10,000 years of Indian culture in all its breathtaking grandeur, beauty, wisdom and bliss. It brilliantly showcases the essence of India's ancient architecture, traditions and timeless spiritual messages. The Akshardham experience is an enlightening journey through India's glorious art, values and contributions for the progress, happiness and harmony of mankind.

The grand, ancient-styled Swaminarayan Akshardham complex was built in only five years through the blessings of HDH Pramukh Swami Maharaj of the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) and the colossal devotional efforts of 11,000 artisans and BAPS volunteers. The complex was inaugurated on 6 November, 2005.

Akshardham means the eternal, divine abode of the supreme God, the abode of eternal values and virtues of Akshar as defined in the Vedas and Upanishads where divine bhakti, purity and peace forever pervades.

The beautiful monument built without steel, consists of 234 ornately carved pillars, 9 ornate domes, 20 quadrangled shikhars, a spectacular Gajendra Pith (plinth of stone elephants) and 20,000 murtis and statues of India's great sadhus, devotees, acharyas and divine personalities.

The monument is a fusion of pink stone and pure white marble, where pink stone symbolizes bhakti in eternal bloom and white marble that of absolute purity and eternal peace. Akshardham was created by HDH Pramukh Swami Maharaj in fulfillment to the wish of his guru, Brahmaswarup Yogiji Maharaj, the fourth successor in the spiritual hierarchy of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. In only a short timespan of five years Swaminarayan Akshardham became a reality through the blessings of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, 300 million man hours of epic services rendered by 11,000 volunteers, sadhus and artisans and the immense sacrifice, austerities, prayers of hundreds of thousands of young and old devotees of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha.

Some features:

Monument: Swaminarayan Akshardham reflects the essence and magnitude of India's ancient architecture, traditions and timeless spirituality.

Rise at dawn to enjoy the Taj Mahal in the peaceful morning light. We'll seek out several views of the exterior, then tour the inner chambers. This afternoon, contrast the ethereal Taj with the imposing Agra Fort, an immense fortified palace that was a seat of Mughal power. Some of its battlements are more than 60 feet tall.

Agra is famous as being home to one of the Seven Wonders of the world-the "TAJ MAHAL". The architectural splendour of the mausoleums, the fort and the palaces is a vivid reminder of the opulence of the legendary Mughal Empire, of which Agra was the capital in the 16th and early 17th centuries. While its significance as a political centre ended with the transfer of the capital to Delhi in 1634 by Shah Jahan, its architectural wealth has secured its place on the international map. A pleasant town with a comparatively slow pace, Agra is know for its superb inlay work on the marble and soapstone by craftsmen who are descendants of those who worked under the Mughals. The city is also famous for its carpets, gold thread embroidery and leather shoes.

Fatehpur Sikri, a mysterious 16th Century city that once rivaled London in its population, wealth and grandeur. The site occupies 117 miles and is enclosed by a wall. Built in 1571, it was mysteriously abandoned just 15 years later. Today, it is India's "Ghost City."

Fatehpur Sikri, 38 km from Agra, was one of the capital cities of Akbar after the childless Mughal was blessed with a son with the blessings of the Sufi saint, Sheikh Salim Chisti, who lived here. The new capital came up in 1569. Through the Juxtaposition of the buildings seems whimsical, they are thoughtfully planned, imparting an atmosphere of playful brilliance. Towering, walls on three sides surround the rectangular-shaped city, accessible through nine gates, and an artificial lake is located on the west. Credit for preserving the monuments goes to Lord Curzon. These protected monuments and the city's environs are well maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.

One of the principle towns of Kangra valley. It is set in the backdrop of snow-clad peaks of Dhauladhar Mountains. Dharamshala over looks the plains and is surrounded by dense pine trees and Deodar forests. A nearby snowline with numerous streams and cool healthy atmosphere makes the surroundings very attractive. Dharamshala is dominated by the Tibetan community but it still retains the colonial lifestyle and British fervour that had rediscovered the place.

This busy bazaar town was established as the travelers base camp that come to explore the nearby mountains. The Kotwali Bazaar provides all the color and idiosyncrasies of a small town, which is mixed with the simple lifestyle.

The colorful temple and Gompas which reflect the culture of Tibet adds attraction for the visitor. India is the home of one of the oldest healing systems-the Ayurveda. It traces its roots from one of the ancient Indian scripture - the Vedas, where it is defined as the science of life or the study of body mechanism. Divine Travels invites you to visit India and take the maximum benefit of this comprehensive system of natural healthcare.

Ayurveda believes that there are three primary life forces-vatha(mobility), pitha(energy) and kapha(stamina) and the imbalance between them is the very cause of all ailments. Unlike modern diagnosis, Ayurveda diagnoses your body constituents to better understand your ailment. It will then cure you accordingly to bring back the natural balance of the biological humors.

This ancient science also discusses other basic concepts like saptha dhatus (the body tissues), srotas (channels), ama (toxins) and trinity of life, that is, the body, mind and spiritual awareness.

We will take you to the best ayurvedic center in India where the treatment is divided into two groups-tonification and reduction. The expert practitioners there will treat you using their vast experience and knowledge and rest assured the ayurvedic medicines wouldn't cause any adverse side effects as they are prepared using natural plants, metals, minerals and even mud & sand.

It might sound incredible but the description of the incurable diseases like AIDS, Cancer and many others can be found in the Vedas. Ayurveda offers remedies even for these fatal diseases, which is still a formidable task for the modern medicine.

Surely, your visit to India is incomplete if you are not touched by the magic of Ayurveda. Once thought of as unattainable enlightenment is now within your grasp with Divine Travels. In your quest to discover the hidden treasure of Ayurveda we would feel proud to be your guiding partner.

According to Ayurveda, the universe is made of five primordial elements, namely earth, air, fire, water and ether. These elements themselves are inanimate, but in combination give rise to three main biological forces or principles in the human body, called doshas vata, pitta and kapha.

These doshas are key to your psycho physiological nature. As every human being has a different balance of elements, one dosha is typically predominant in our constitution and ascertains our personality.

KUMBH LEGEND AND TIMING

Though all the Hindu festivals are celebrated in Haridwar, but it is the Kumbh Mela that attracts the mind of pilgrims to Haridwar. Kumbh fair is held every 12 years. The origin of the Kumbh dates back to the time when amrita kalasha (pot of nectar of immortality) was recovered from Samudramanthan (during the churning of the primordial sea), after which a brutal war between devatas (Gods) and asuras (Demons) ensued. To prevent the amrita kalasha being forcibly taken into possession by asuras, who were more powerful than the devatas, its safety was entrusted to the devatas Brahaspati (Jupiter), Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), and Shani (Saturn).

The four devatas ran away with the amrita kalasha to hide it from the asuras. Learning the conspiracy of the devatas, the asuras turned ferocious and chased the 4 devatas running with amrita kalasha. The chase lasted 12 years, during which the devatas and asuras went round the earth. During this chase, the devatas hid amrita kalasha at the cities Haridwar, Prayag, Ujjain and Nasik. To commemorate this holy event of the amrita kalasha being put at 4 places, Kumbh is celebrated every 12 years in the 4 places. According to other Pauranic legends, the fight took place between devatas and asuras, resulting in the amrita kalasha being knocked, out of which amrita (Nectar) fell down at the 4 places.

Indian tradition has a very definite relation with the natural surroundings, whether with the rivers and mountains or with the celestial configuration and astrological transition seen up above. Every transition in the planetary movements defines the times scale and is, therefore, observed as "parva" in the Hindu customs. As these changes in the planetary configurations give rise to the cycle of season, they also affect the human life. Ancient Indian seers have studied all these effects, and customs are set in order to observe the natural phenomena and adjust with their effects on our life.

A "parva" in Sanskrit, literally means a bridge connecting a time-gap. Every planetary movement is cyclic and its completion creates a new division on the timescale. Such cosmic transitions are regularly observed with the Hindu rituals and Festivals. All such rituals also have their mythological connections and spiritual connotations.

The year in which the Kumbh Mela is held at any one of the four places is determined by referencing the Indian almanac. At Prayag the Kumbh is held in the month of Magha (January/February) and the highest merit is attached to bathing on the new moon day, when Jupiter is in Taurus and both the sun and moon are in Capricorn. At Hardwar it is held in Phalgun and Chaitra (February/March/April) when the Sun passes to Aries and Jupiter is in Aquarius. In Ujjain it is held in the Vaishakha Month (May) when the planets are in Libra. At Nasik it takes place in Shravana (July) when the planets are in Cancer.

Kumbh Mela comes at the time when Sun, Jupiter and Moon are at specific position on the Hindu Sidereal zodiac. The date of Kumbh at Haridwar falls when Jupiter is in Aquarius, and Sun and Moon are in the Aries and Sagittarius zodiacs respectively.

 City  Jupiter  Sun  Moon
 Haridwar  Aquarius  Aries Sagittarius
 Prayag (Allahabad)  Taurus  Capricorn  Capricorn
 Nasik  Scorpio  Cancer  Cancer
 Ujjain  Leo  Aries  Aries

As Jupiter takes about 11 years, 10 months and 14 days to complete its revolution around the sun, its obvious that it comes back to any specific position on its orbit on completion of nearly 12 years. Thus all these planetary configurations repeat every 12th year and, thus, Kumbh Mela also comes after the same interval.

The mythological story of appearance of Amrit (Nectar of life) from the churning of the ocean is related with the occurrence of Kumbh Mela and, thus, this occasion has ritualistic importance. The spiritual symbolism is very poignant. Sun and Moon respectively stand for human rational intellect and mind.

Known as "Guru" in Sanskrit, Jupiter is the spiritual master. When the sun (rational Intellect) having definite relation with Jupiter (Guru) guides the moon (human mind), the result is the realization of the immortality (Amrit) of self. Therefore, the Indian tradition gives importance of being at specific places, having a dip in the river, performing religious rituals and attending spiritual discourses during the occasions of Kumbh Mela.

HARIDWAR TRAVEL INFORMATION

Haridwar : The Happening Place For Kumbh

Haridwar, Uttaranchal Pradesh, gateway to the four pilgrimages in the Uttaranchal region, is located on the foot hills of Shivaliks. It is on the banks of River Ganges. The Ganga leaves the mountains and enters the plains with Haridwar being the first major town on the plains. Though the Ganges does not lose its rapids completely, nevertheless it becomes very quite and calm here. The water is clean and people prefer taking bath on the numerous ghats built on the river shores. It is said that taking bath here purifies the soul and opens the way for the ultimate freedom--Nirvana.

Haridwar has earned fame as being the place that has been blessed by the trinity of Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. It is also one of the major Shaktipeeths (places sacred to Mother Divine). Throughout the ages Haridwar has purified the mind, body, and soul. Not only in spiritual or religious terms Haridwar has come up as a major learning center for arts, science and culture. This place has maintained the Gurukul tradition of teaching. This ancient tradition of teaching has maintained its fervor in Haridwar.
